By now, your child has had exposure to adding and subtracting two digit numbers with and without regrouping. We have used concrete materials(base ten materials) to learn what is going on when we regroup. We then learned how to use standard formula's to do this calculation on paper without the materials. Below is a link to some posters with a poem we have used to help remember when to regroup or not, and what to do when we need to. These posters can be helpful if you want to review how to subtract at home with your child.
Subtracting Posters
We are now learning how to solve problems involving 2 digit subtraction and addition. When doing so, students need to carefully read questions and look for clues that tell them whether to add or subtract. They also need to understand how to form a question and write it down. When creating a subtraction question, students need to understand that the larger number is the number they need to take away from, and write their question accordingly.
