Math
So far in math we have been:
-counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 25's to 200, starting from different numbers
-identifying and continuing number patterns using these different ways of counting
-counting backwards from 50
-reading and writing number words
-using base-ten blocks and pictures to build numbers using hundreds, tens, and ones
-doing addition and subtraction of single digit numbers to 18
-identifying strategies that make addition and subtraction easier, such as keeping the larger number in your head and addition up, 10 facts, doubles, near doubles, etc.
-identifying, describing, continuing, and creating number patterns and two attribute patterns
-identifying, describing by their attributes, and sorting 2D shapes
-adding two digit numbers with and without regrouping using a variety of strategies
-solving problems involving addition and subtraction
-estimating and measuring using standard units (cm and m)

Language
In Reading, we have been working on our reading stamina while reading independently and choosing "just right" books. We are also beginning to talk about visualization while reading.
In Writing, we have been focusing on recount writing as part of our "Monday Morning News"(or sometimes Tuesday!) In particular, we have discussed:
-proper sentences(it's one complete thought and it makes sense by it self)
-correct use of capitals at the beginning of a sentence, for names of people and places, days of the week, months, and celebration names
-correct use of periods
-re-reading writing to make sure it makes sense
-a topic sentence at the beginning of the writing, including when the activity was done, such as "On Saturday I went skating with my family."
-a concluding sentence at the end, such as "Skating with my family was so much fun!"
We are now "Working on Writing" every English day. Students are selecting their own topics for writing and writing independently. They are encouraged to use their individual writing checklists (that we co-constructed based on their writing needs) to edit their writing. We have also practiced using mind-maps to brainstorm and organize our thinking prior to writing.

Science
We are learning about matter. We have defined matter as anything that takes us space and has weight. We have learned that matter comes in three forms-solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have a shape and keep their shape. Liquids do not have a shape but take on the shape of their container.
We have conducted various experiments to learn about solids and liquids. Ask your child to tell you about them.
