We've been working on two digit addition with and without regrouping. Students can have difficulty learning two digit addition if they haven't mastered the concept of place value(tens and ones) and/or if they have not memorized basic math facts and strategies for mental math(10 facts, Doubles, Near Doubles, etc). Students can continue to practice these at home until they become more automatic.
When these skills are in place, two digit addition comes much more easily. There are a variety of strategies students can use to solve these questions. Students have been exposed to each strategy and are encouraged to use whichever strategy they are most comfortable. However, we are working on explaining our thinking. When asked how they got an answer, saying something like "I just added it" or "I just knew it in my head" isn't enough. Students should be able to demonstrate their thinking on paper and orally to myself and other classmates. Attached is a document with the strategies we have learned. In each, it is shown what is happening both on paper and in a students' head. As they learn, much of their thinking should be on the paper. As they master these strategies mentally, they can show less on the paper but should be able to explain orally when asked.

Most students have mastered using concrete materials and should be beginning to use a strategy they have learned, or one of their own if it works and make sense. Be sure to check out the document so you can reinforce the strategies at home and discuss them with your child. Some students find it helpful when using a place value strategy to work on grid paper.
